Overheat alarm going off?Throttle back and stop the engine as soon as it's safe. Running an overheating outboard can turn a cheap impeller job into a major engine repair.
- Weak or no tell-tale streamThe little jet of water at the back should be steady. A weak stream often points to a worn impeller or blocked passage.
- Hard starting or won't startUsually fuel, spark, battery or a blocked filter. Sometimes it's water in the fuel.
- Losing power or won't get on the planeCould be fuel delivery, ignition, a damaged prop or the engine going into a protection mode.

How often to service your outboard
Every engine maker publishes its own schedule, so your owner's manual is the final word. As an example, here's Honda's published schedule for its four-stroke outboards. Whichever comes first, the months or the hours.

Flush after salt water
Run fresh water through the engine after every saltwater trip. Salt and sand build up in the cooling passages and cause overheating.

Do you service outboards other than Honda?
Yes. We are an authorised Honda Marine dealer, but our mechanics service and repair other makes of outboard too. Send us the brand, horsepower and model and we will confirm before you book.
Do you have a mobile boat mechanic?
Yes. We run mobile service vans alongside the Malaga workshop. Mobile servicing suits routine work where the boat is easy to reach. Bigger repairs and diagnostics are usually done in the workshop. Tell us your suburb and the job and we will tell you which suits.
How often should I service my outboard?
Follow the schedule in your owner's manual. Honda's published schedule asks for a first service at one month or 20 hours, then a service every 6 months or 100 hours, whichever comes first. Most other brands use a similar early first service followed by regular hour or time based intervals.

My outboard won't start. Can you help?
Yes. Call or send an enquiry with the engine brand, model and what it is doing. Hard starting usually traces back to fuel, spark, battery or a safety lanyard, and our mechanics will work through it in order before quoting any repair.
What details do I need to book an outboard service?
The engine brand, horsepower, model and serial number, the approximate engine hours, when it was last serviced and a short description of any problems. Photos of the engine plate help.
How much does a boat service cost in Perth?

My outboard went under water. What should I do?
Get it to a mechanic as soon as possible. Honda advises taking a submerged motor to an authorised dealer soon after recovery to limit corrosion. Do not try to start it. Call us on (08) 9248 2242.
Do you sell outboard parts as well?
Yes. We carry spare parts at the Malaga workshop, and genuine Honda outboard parts are also available online through Honda Outboard Bits, which operates from the same Malaga location.
